Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks

    Mig — Mon, 03/15/2010 - 08:16

So this is actually the first ESPN 30 For 30 I've sat down and watched start to finish. Others weren't interesting enough for me to seek it out and actually set the DVR or watch it as it aired. This is a crazy trip down memory lane. I remember where I was watching all these games. I remember the 94 and 95 Pacers/Knicks series as well as I remember any of the Rockets series those 2 years. (Except the Portland First Round series, for some reason that's escaped my mind completely).

Reggie in Game 5 in 1994 killing Spike Lee. I was so disappointed that it wasn't going to be my favorite player/team (Hakeem/Rockets) vs my favorite non-Rocket team/player (Reggie/Pacers) in the NBA Finals that year. I was so sure they'd win game 6, and even thought "OK, Reggie will hit a game winner in Game 7 to rip the heart out of New York." Didn't happen, Pacers lost again the next year in the Eastern Conference Finals, so two times my favorite non-Rocket player could have been facing off against my favorite player. I probably would have flipped out if it had happened.

My old roommate (follow @moes19 on Twitter and ask him) knows how big of a Reggie Miller fan I am. We played NBA Live 96 not too long ago, he was the Orlando Magic, I was the Indiana Pacers. Reggie Miller was hitting half court shots regularly. I think I made one or two full court shots from the opposite corner. All you heard all game was "THREE. THREE. THREE. THREE." I think I've been officially banned from ever using Reggie Miller in any video game ever. I can't even create him on Wii to use in Wii Sports, and there's not even a basketball game on there.

Back to the Knicks/Pacers. Both games were winnable in 94, but in 95 the Pacers just ran into the buzzsaw that was Shaquille O'Neal

This is being set to "Until I Delete" on my DVR.

Little bit of Facebook conversation between me and a buddy, Knick fan, and I agree 100%.

    Wellington:

As painful as it was, what an amazing time for basketball. I'm sure you agree and not just because of your boys winning it all. So many legit teams waging war on each other, the east alone had the Heat, Knicks, Magic, and Pacers along with the recently Jordan-less Bulls in those two years.

30 for 30 is such amazing programming for us OT Sports Whores. I am glad it's back!

    Mig:

The West was ridiculous as well. Jazz, Sonics, Spurs, Suns. We NEVER could get past the Sonics. The Nuggets did us a HUUUUGE favor when they knocked off the Sonics as an 8 seed back then.

That 84 and 85 draft era was ridiculous. Jordan. Hakeem. Ewing. Barkley. There are tons and tons of names in this era. There are a ton more names that I'd rather not run through right now cause I'll be listing dozens of names. That era still trumps the 96 Draft class I think. The jury is still out on the 2003 Draft class, cause they're pretty damn good, but the 84 Class is the best class I've gotten to see in my lifetime.

I need to go back and watch some of the other 30 For 30 shows, cause this one got me hooked.
