    Digital Media OCD

    Mig — Mon, 11/30/2009 - 18:30

So here's one of my many weird traits. I obsess over the organization of a lot of my digital media, mainly, my MP3s and my DVD rips. Yes I own these DVDs, and rip them to my PC because I'm a lazy ass and I like the way Windows Media Center in Windows 7 handles the DVD rips. WMC and the MyMovies application combine to give one of the easiest archiving/presentation combos I've seen for any digital media. It basically turns your movie collection into a Netflix-y screen where you can scroll through all your movies. It automatically adds DVD art, actors, synopsis/plot, and links to trailers. With the media center PC hooked up to my TV, it makes being a couch potato that much more fun. Photos are a little easier. For the most part, I just upload a set to flickr, then mirror that set in a folder on my PC. I don't care about naming them correctly so much as making sure they're in the right album. Flickr takes all the work out of organizing albums, which is good for the weirdos of the world such as myself. Music. MP3s. Oh boy, this one is gonna be painful. I've probably spent full weeks organizing my music collection. My go to application for fixing ID3 tags and album information is Tag&Rename. I've probably been using it or 4 years now, and its the best app I've found that does nearly everything I want it to do. I will normally name my mp3s like this. • Muse - Uprising.mp3 • Jay-Z - Run This Town.mp3 • ApolloXVIII - Cheater's Waltz.mp3 Tag&Rename will take that and generate ID3 tags from it (the info your iPod/MP3 player reads to display what song is playing). It's a huge time saver when you're as obsessive about renaming them all as I have been. Album art I will eventually finish, but I'd say I've got a good 90% covered. This will also get thrown onto my media center when done, so I can access all my digital media from my couch. It takes a lot of effort to be lazy. I'll update w/ the finished product in a few weeks.
